A plan to divide Georgetown into four quadrants in an effort to ease traffic congestion is likely to commence in March, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee said yesterday.
In revealing some of his Ministry’s 2014 plans, Rohee said that the National Commission on Law and Order (NCLO) conducted “a comprehensive analysis” on the traffic congestion, a consequence of the large number of vehicles using the streets in our capital city.
“After much discussion with stakeholders, it was proposed that a series of complementary one way streets be introduced to control the direction and flow of vehicular traffic, thus easing the daily congestion,” Rohee said.
“In light of this, the Ministry sought and received Cabinet’s approval for Georgetown to be divided into four quadrants, – those being North West, North East, South East and South West.”
Rohee stated that his Ministry intends to implement this project in phases in order to minimize its impact on the travelling public. A commencement date has been set for March 2014, and will be preceded by a Public Relations campaign to inform citizens of the new traffic system.
“My Ministry calls on all of our stakeholders to work with the Guyana Police Force to ensure that there is improved security of our citizens.
“For our part, the Ministry of Home Affairs will in 2014 strive to provide more resources to the Force and from a policy perspective, represent to the Force issues relating to the well being of our citizens that they must consider in rolling out their prevention plans on Crime and Security and Traffic management for 2014.”
