– Magistrate overrules woman’s attempt to offer no evidence
A lover’s spat which allegedly stemmed from an argument over a cellular phone landed a McDoom, East Bank Demerara couple before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
On December 21, the 32-year-old unemployed man, Renshan Munroe, allegedly assaulted his reputed wife Latoya Hinds at Lot 6 Public Road, McDoom. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The woman attempted to offer no evidence in the matter. However, her effort to essentially abort the case was fruitless as the Prosecution readily objected to this.
Corporal Seon Blackman, representing the prosecution, interjected as he recalled that the two had appeared on several occasions where Munroe was charged for the same offence.
According to Blackman, the woman had repeatedly chosen the same course of action. He opined that the situation could have been more serious and warned the court that this could likely escalate into something more detrimental since the charge is a result of an ongoing situation between the two.
Blackman said that on the day in question, they had an argument over a cellular phone which caused the accused to become annoyed. As a result of his annoyance, he reportedly dealt the pregnant woman a cuff to her abdomen.
The prosecution offered objections on account of the serious nature of the offence as well as the penalty attached to same. Blackman also noted the victim’s condition.
The accused told the court that as a result of matters past, he was recommended for counseling. He added that though he is currently unemployed, he was scheduled to join the workforce in the mining industry on Monday.
Though the Magistrate had already ordered him held, the woman attempted to plead for him. She begged the court to let him go saying “Is me and he alone wheh we deh. If he go who gun support me? Y’all ain’t understand.”
However, the Magistrate did not change her position on bail. Munroe was remanded to prison where he will await his next court date, January 6.
