– cops say motive may not have been robbery
Pegasus taxi driver Rudrinauth Jeeboo picked up two passengers a few hours before he was found murdered and dumped in a garbage heap in Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt.
A top police official disclosed yesterday that surveillance tapes gleaned from security cameras at the Pegasus Hotel showed the taxi driver picking up a man in the hotel compound. Jeeboo then drove outside the compound and picked up a woman before continuing his journey.
Kaieteur News understands that detectives have enhanced the surveillance footage with a view of identifying the passengers.
The official said that investigators are working on several leads but are yet to make any arrests. Police are reportedly checking on whether there was a motive other than a carjacking behind Jeeboo’s death.
The victim’s recently purchased car, minus the number plates and taxi logo, was found abandoned at the back of Guyhoc Gardens. No attempt was apparently made to strip the vehicle, and aside from a cell phone, nothing was apparently stolen from the slain man.
Jeeboo, said to be about 49, had worked with the Pegasus Taxi Service for about 20 years and his colleagues said that he was not in the habit of picking up strange passengers.
“I can’t understand how it happened. Is over 15 years that he doing taxi work,” one driver said. “None of us (at the Pegasus) pick up work on the road at night. We got a warning (about this) from the hotel.”
Jeeboo’s body, with wounds to the head, neck and chest, was found in a heap of refuse in Cane View Avenue, South Rumiveldt, at around 07:00 hrs last Saturday. Police managed to identify him from documents found on his person.
Head of the Guyana Minibus Association, Hilbert Archer, lives a short distance away and was one of the first persons to notice the corpse. He noted that the area where the body was dumped is usually desolate after 18:00hrs and taxi drivers seldom venture there after sundown.
Some of Jeeboo’s colleagues said that he left his Lot 25 Delph and Craig Streets, Campbellville home at around 21:00 hrs on Friday to pick up his car, which he had left at the Pegasus. One source said that he was seen at the hotel up to midnight.
