Two friends lost their lives in Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, after their Toyota car ran into a parked low-bed trailer last evening.
Dead are Shameer Haniff, 19, of Skull City, Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara: and a Canal Number Two resident whose name was given as “Roy” and said to be about 20 years old.
Both were said to be drinking and had pulled off from a shop. They had travelled no more than 300 metres when they collided with the trailer. The trailer was parked in the corner and off the road. Bystanders blamed speeding as the cause of the accident.
Haniff, according to family members who rushed down to the scene, is said to be an operator with B.K. International.
Roy was said to be working in the gold mines in the interior. Family members said that they were not sure when he came out. Close associates said that he was wanted by police for rape.
Neighbours said the two appeared to have been drinking as there were beer bottles in the car. Haniff, the driver, was almost decapitated.
The car, a Toyota Fielder bearing number plates PPP 6627, was a write off. A portion of the trailer passed through the windscreen and reached almost to the front seat.
Bystanders said that two could not have known what hit them and would have died on the spot.
The Christmas holidays have been deadly with several persons killed on the roadways.
