“After giving over 38 years of service to one’s country it is expected that one will be treated with some respect. But in Guyana things are different.” Those were the words of retired headmaster, O’Neil Leitch, of 22 Liverpool Village Corentyne, Berbice.
Mr. Leitch’s displeasure is with the ailing Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Company and the royal run around he has been receiving with respect to the government’s promised $20,000 assistance to pensioners.
He bluntly feels that some skullduggery is afoot and wants it to be investigated. His efforts to get redress and seek a meeting with Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal and Prime Minister Sam Hinds have all been unsuccessful.
Mr. Leitch stated that after receiving the news of the promised subsidy he took in his relevant documents inclusive of his pension book, identification card, receipts for his pre-paid meter to the GPL Kilcoy Office on July 29, last, for verification and processing.
He stated that after noticing an advertisement in the October 30 edition of Kaieteur News that persons who qualify for the subsidy will receive a letter, he immediately made inquiries with the GPL Call Centre in Georgetown about the status of his application. He was bluntly told that nothing was in the system for him. He protested and gave the clerk the relevant information over the phone and was told to recheck with the Kilcoy Office on the Corentyne.
He immediately visited the Kilcoy Office and checked with the Supervisor, who told him that she will have to make enquiries and to return the next day.
Mr. Leitch stated that he revisited the office on October 31 and to his bafflement, was told that the clerk that took the information made a mistake and nothing was in the system for him. He was given the assurance by the Supervisor, one Miss Skinner, “that everything, that he will get the money for November.”
Not being satisfied he called the GPL Call Centre and was told that the information was in the system and the money will be credited in December. Being concerned with receiving different information he spoke to Miss Skinner again, on November 26, and was told that there was another mistake and that the money will be credited in December.
The retired Head teacher stated that to his disappointment nothing materalised on the date as promised. When he made further inquiries he was told by the supervisor that she doesn’t know when he will get the subsidy. He was told by GPL to check with the Ministry of Finance.
His many efforts to get in touch with the relevant personnel at the Ministry have been unending with no clear indication if he will get a positive answer.
He journeyed to Georgetown in an effort to get in touch with the relevant personnel in GPL and the Ministry but to no avail. He was told at GPL head office that he cannot meet the CEO. He spoke to a clerk who took him on another adventure and promised to get back to him, but until now he hasn’t received an answer. At the Ministry of Finance it was worse. He was told that GPL should make the adjustments. He made efforts to contact the Officer of the Prime Minister, but to no avail.
Mr. Leitch feels that something fishy is afoot and some skullduggery in going on. He believes that if the Government has boldly announced that it will give pensioners subsidy, then they should have it. His pre-paid No is 07063869999
