The three-year-old child who was mauled by a large feline suspected to be a puma, is battling for her life in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Little Jasmine Joseph of Isseneru, Region Seven, is attached to a life support machine in the unit and has been unconscious since she was attacked by the animal.
The toddler sustained severe head injuries and medical practitioners are trying their best to save her life.
Around 09:00hrs on Friday, the child was playing in her yard when she was attacked and dragged into the nearby bushes by the animal. Her uncle, who was in the house, heard her screams and rushed to her aid with a cutlass.
Assisted by neighbours, the man reportedly chopped the animal before burning it. The child was then air-dashed to the GPHC where she is now a patient.
On Friday, the child’s grandmother, Agatha Joseph, said that she had left Jasmine and two other grandchildren with their aunt at home to attend a nearby church service.
“I left home like 07:00(am) on Friday. We were going around the village to pray for sick people and around 09:00hrs we hear loud screams coming from across the river and we thought that them children went into a boat and fall in the water so we send somebody to check. Then a li’l after, them come back with my granddaughter in the boat.”
The older Joseph said that her home is surrounded by bushes and it was not the first time that her granddaughter was attacked.
“Last month a jaguar jumped on her and scraped her on her foot but I hit it and it get away,” the grandmother stressed.
