The Giftland OfficeMax MegaMall is scheduled for opening within six months of the New Year.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, earlier this week, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Giftland OfficeMax, Ian Ramdeo explained that the company is working to ensure that the grand opening of the new complex is spectacular.
“The Mall is scheduled to open within the first half of this year realistically
around June 2014 because construction will be completed around March…We will have to set up the stores, we don’t want to start half way with some people on board and others not there we have at least 120 different entities beside Giftland OfficeMax we have food courts, restaurants, movie theatres and a whole host of other outlets, but we want to ensure that they are there for the grand opening.”
Ramdeo also commented on the incidence of a fire, which took place on Christmas Eve night at the Water Street location. He said that the occurrence caused a brief disruption of shopping at the store.
“What happened is that apparently two wires bridged and it sparked outside the building on the canopy, someone had reported that they saw a spark and we were looking into it when someone else reported that they saw smoke coming through the vent… the smoke got into the duct air conditioning into the store…It was around 10:30 pm close to mid night we still had quite a few costumers in the store. We pulled the fire alarm and cleared the building fire fighters came and did their checks and it was contained.
Earlier this year, Giftland Officemax entered into numerous agreements with different companies.
Among the entities which entered Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Giftland OfficeMax , is Fast food franchise holder Camex Restaurants Inc. (Church’s Chicken, Mario’s Pizza and Quiznos), investing in excess of $50 million for the occupation of sections of the multibillion dollar Mega Mall at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
The mega-mall is being financed through support from Commercial Banks as well as two private investors.
The complex will incorporate international and indigenous aspects into its design and service offerings. It will also serve as a tourist (both local and foreign) attraction and assures at least 2000 job opportunities upon completion.
The Mall features more than 140 specialty stores, a modern interior design with nine 20-foot aquariums, spacious walkways and convenient seating areas with six escalators and four elevators, famous restaurant franchises and a food court with over 20 local and international cuisine choices, secure parking for over 600 cars, bus terminal and valet parking.
Services such as ATMs for all banks, beauty salons, and barbershops, spas, postal and bill payment services will also be available, and expansion plans include more shops, entertainment outlets, supermarkets and a multi-level car park.
The mall will reportedly be the largest of its kind in Guyana – a little over 170,000 square feet.
The 10-acre plot of land was acquired by Giftland OfficeMax in 2007, through the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), but construction did not commence until 2009.
