Earlier this month the Ministry of Human Services had reported that seventeen women were killed this year, as a result of domestic violence.
In 2012, twenty -two women lost their lives to domestic violence.
However, according to the data provided by the documentation center of the Human Services Ministry, there has been a notable fluctuation in the number of murders dating back to 2007.
In 2007 twenty four (24) women were killed by their male partners or relatives within an eleven month period.
The year which had the least recorded domestic carnage was 2009. Fourteen women were killed that year.
On December 14, the Ministry held a vigil in remembrance of this year’s victims. The event marked the conclusion of 16 days of activism for International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women as well as
International Human Rights Day.
At the event, Minister of Human Services, Jennifer Webster noted that the number of women killed by their partners in 2013 is ‘too high.’
Minister Webster reminded the gathering that the women were all mothers, daughters, sisters, neighbours, friends and relatives with the potential of helping to craft the nation’s development.
“Moreso, this vigil is symbolic to emphasize the fact that we lost productive daughters of the soil. The loss of a mother to violence has a severe negative impact on children throughout communities of the world.”
