On Monday last, news came that Timothy Adams, a 57-year-old miner, was brutally murdered at Turtle Creek, Five Star Backdam, in the Port Kaituma area.
Reports had indicated that a few hours later after the incident occurred, a shopkeeper arrested a suspect who is said to have robbed the deceased of $19,000 in cash, and a quantity of gold after fatally injuring the miner.
Yesterday, the suspect who was identified as 22-year-old Marlon Freeman of 14 Hodge Lane, Linden was whisked before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry soon after landing in the city.
Freeman was flown to the city from Port Kaituma and was ordered held after he made his first court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
In court, he stood accused of murdering Timothy Adams at Turtle Creek on December 22, in the course of the furtherance of a robbery. He was not required to plead to the charge since it was an indictable charge.
Corporal Bharat Mangru, the Prosecutor, said that about 16:00 hours on December 22, the deceased left Powis Landing en route to his mining camp which is located some distance.
Around 9:00 hours the next day, Adam’s body was found lying next to an ATV with a wound to the left side of his neck. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Pakera Hospital.
Additionally, news from the area stated that a woman saw Freeman “running like a mad man” from the location where Timothy Adams was killed. She said too that she saw Adams’s all-terrain vehicle (ATV) but took it for nothing.
As investigations were being conducted, Freeman reportedly admitted to committing the murder whilst under caution.
The police are also investigating reports that Freeman may have been involved in two murders at Mowasie Landing. He has reported admitted to the police that he had killed a Brazilian and a Guyanese at Mowasie Landing.
According to reports, the accused stated that he had been at Mowasie Landing before moving to Port Kaituma just over two years ago.
Mrs. Pamela Adams, wife of the slain miner, recalled that her husband had a prior encounter with Freeman. Yesterday, she was finalizing arrangements to bury her husband on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the matter has been transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance to answer to the murder charge on February 3, 2014.
