Just two days ago, a warder at the Georgetown Prisons found two 12-gauge shotgun cartridges stashed in a pair of Nike sneakers. And yesterday a 29-year-old miner was brought before the courts for allegedly attempting to sneak same into the prison.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was Kellon Benjamin, who the prosecution claimed had in his possession two live rounds of ammunition on December 23 at the prison, whilst he was not the holder of a firearm licence at the time.
The prosecution was represented by Police Prosecutor Corporal Bharat Mangru who told the court that on that day, Benjamin visited the prison to take clothing and footwear to an inmate of the prison, Anthony Watson.
He said, however, at about 11:30 hours the plan was unearthed after a routine search was conducted and the two cartridges were found in the left side of the Nike sneakers whilst in the ‘hands’ of the accused.
Anthony Watson is one of the inmates accused of a series of criminal offences, among which are the November 4, 2009 arson attempt at the Supreme Court and of the murder of a civilian. He has reportedly been on remand since December 2010.
Newspaper reports indicated that the discovery of the ammunition has sparked fears that a weapon may have already been smuggled into the prison. Up to late Monday evening, the entire prison population was allegedly on ‘lockdown,’ while police and prison officials scoured the premises.
Meanwhile, at the court hearing, the accused was represented by a Defence Attorney who stated that his client had been working in the interior for three months. He said that the package which his client attempted to deliver was merely a ‘favour’ for someone.
He claimed that Benjamin did not know what was concealed therein since the errand only extended to him collecting and delivering the package.
In response, the Chief Magistrate refused bail and the miner was remanded to prison where he will await his next court appearance. The matter was adjourned until January 14, 2014 for report and fixtures.
