A year or two ago, members of the joint services and residents of the jungle frontier town of Eteringbang would not have imagined standing on the border with Venezuela and making mobile calls to friends and relatives in the city or overseas. But before the year is out, mobile provider Digicel is planning to commission its radio base station or cell tower right on the border to provide services to one of the remotest communities in the country.
Digicel has again created history with the installation of what was described as a partially powered solar station to service the interior and notably, mining communities. By the end of the month, someone calling from that interior location could easily access contacts in Africa, Asia or even Alaska, thus linking the jungle with the rest of the world.
Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean told this newspaper that they are proud to once again be making such a move. He highlighted that it is not the first time that the company has been embarking on such ventures, with locations such as Matthew’s Ridge, Lethem and Baramita already experiencing increased communication through the cellular service company.
Digicel has continuously noted that their motive behind setting up sites in these remote locations is to ensure, if not all but most of the communities in the Region are linked. Kwebana and Wakapao received the first and second towers respectively, with government officials applauding the company for venturing on with tasks they have been trying to achieve which is to better link far-reaching areas to the country’s main vein and environs.
In another move to improve telecommunications, Digicel has announced further an agreement with Guadeloupe-based Loret Group and Caribbean Fibre Holdings to acquire a submarine fibre network across the Caribbean region.
Digicel will have its own submarine fibre optic cable network of approximately 2,100km providing capacity from Trinidad to Guadeloupe.
Company officials stated that it entered into a transaction with Global Caribbean Fibre and Global Caribbean Network to provide submarine fibre capacity from Guadeloupe to Puerto Rico with onwards connectivity to the mainland United States.
The company noted that, “With these new capabilities, Digicel is underpinning its commitments to delivering best network, best service and best value and will once again be at the forefront of driving competition and consumer choice in the region.”
