Government will receive a loan of US$25M from the Caribbean Development Bank to fund a project which will protect a number of communities from flooding and other hazards brought on
by the effects of climate change.
According to the bank last Thursday, components of the project include the reconstruction and improvement of approximately 5.4 km of sea and river defences, as well as for capacity in shoreline change monitoring and analysis. The project will also include a Community Awareness and Education Programme.
The project will involve 20 rural communities in Regions Two, Three, Four and Six along the coastline and in Leguan Island which is in the Essequibo estuary. These communities have a combined population of about 45,000 people in about 9,000 households.
Guyana’s coastland is below sea level and heavily dependent on the seawall as its defence from Atlantic Ocean. However, increasingly, the battle has become tougher with increasing incidents of overtopping in recent years.
