Police are investigating the circumstances in which a set of human bones were found on Thursday in a clump of bushes on a vacant plot of land at Waterloo, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
The bones were later identified as the remains of Sookram Ragabir called ‘Baayun’ of the same area. The man had been missing since August. But his disappearance was never reported, because, according to relatives, he had some abnormalities and did various jobs in and around the community and would at times reside where he worked.
His last place of employment in August when he reportedly went missing was at a supermarket in the area as a security guard. According to the relatives, apparently the owner did not know of his whereabouts, because the man visited them and asked for Ragabir. They were surprised, because they had thought that Ragabir was with the supermarket owner all the time.
It was then that their suspicions were aroused and they began searching for him. The search went on for months and even took them to some ‘old folks homes’ and the National Psychiatric Hospital in Fort Canje, because Ragabir was mentally challenged.
It was on Thursday that they were informed that some human bones were found, including part of the foot, the skull, parts of the rib and a part of the spine. A pair of pants and a wallet were found in a trench about 25ft away. They stated that the supermarket owner had told them that “Ragabir should have around $65,000 to $70,000 in his wallet.”
The wallet was found with $24,000 inside.
Residents in the area stated that for the past few months they had been getting a stench coming from the area but thought that it was the body of an animal because persons would usually throw dead animals in the area.
The man leaves to mourn three sisters and one brother. He would have celebrated his birthday on December 26th.
