The Ministry of Housing has achieved its allocation target of over 5,000 house lots for this year. More are expected to be distributed before year-end since the Ministry intends to host more One Stop Shops.
Housing Minister Irfaan Ali mde this assertion during a recent interview with this publication. He said the total number of One Stop Shops hosted by the Ministry for the year 2013 stands at eight. The Ministry will be hosting several more similar exercised to surpass its target of hosting 10 One Stop Shops for the year.
Fifty-nine One Stop Shops were hosted between 2009 and 2013. While the Ministry regularized more than 600 lots for 2013, it distributed over 5,000 new titles this year.
“In addition to that we have more than 3,000 transports and titles that are in the process of being distributed and completed,” he added.
According to Ali, the Ministry has performed tremendously this year with the completion of its programme in record time – by November month-end. In addition, the Ministry was able to launch several projects such as the Professional Housing Development, the 1,000 Homes Initiative, Revolving Homes for Clerical Workers, and Silica City.
He asserted that these programmes were launched to build Guyana’s future of new urban centres and the development of new growth poles and centres.
Indeed, the development of new urban centres is important because of the establishment of new housing developments. With the unavailability of lands for housing development on the East Coast Demerara and limited land available on the East Bank Demerara, the Ministry will be creating a new urban centre – Silica City.
According to Ali, “We do not have any new lands for development…This is because the existing land is owned by GuySuCo and we have exhausted the potential areas, in terms of the best areas for housing development along the East Coast…We’ve bridged this gap by bringing forward and expanding development on the East Bank.”
He said that the Ministry is now in its penultimate state of developing houses on the East Bank Demerara. After distribution of these current sets of land along the East Bank Demerara in areas such as Farm, there is probably one more area before the stretch becomes saturated.
Essentially, this is the reason why the Ministry has prioritized the development of Silica City. It will be aggressively pursuing this undertaking next year. Design works have already commenced.
“We are working with Lands and Survey to earmark the area… to define the area… and it would be a complete mix of development. We are hoping in Silica City we can have some eco-tourism, industrial development, commercial development, residential golfing community and also a low income community, with a farmstead, so it is not an easy community to plan,” Ali said.
He emphasized that it will take a lot of effort for the Ministry to ensure it has the right mix of development that would ensure the success of Silica City.
