Speed boat operators plying the Parika/Supenaam route after the regulated cut off time of 17:30 hours are making huge profits from passengers who are willing to take the risk to get across to the Essequibo Coast from Parika after dark.
Monitors at Supenaam have said that while their cut off time for boats plying the Parika/Supenaam route continues to be 17:30 hours, speedboat operators from Parika continue to operate beyond that deadline at their own risks.
The monitors have indicated that the activity by those Parika speedboat operators is not unique. These operators have been initiating huge prices to transport passengers, especially from across Essequibo Coast because after they would have offloaded passengers at Supenaam they would return to Parika without any passengers.
Passengers from the Essequibo Coast have lamented that while speedboat operators are not forcing passengers to use their services after 17:30 hours they are however advised to pay an extra $700 as opposed to the regular fee of $1,300 to cross over to Parika to Supenaam, especially at this Christmas season.
Thursday evening last, five men including a prominent businessman from the Essequibo Coast agreed to pay $20,000 for five persons to travel after dark from Parika to Supenaam.
