– Quality basketball ends year
By Edison Jefford
The Final Four of the second annual Phillip George Legacy tournament, dubbed PG II, bounces off tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with some intense showdowns in Division I and III basketball in Georgetown. More than any other club, Republic Bank Nets must be enjoying their ascendency to the last four clubs left in the competition. It speaks of immense consistency from the club that lost in the final last year. They are back and they have lots to prove.
Their opposition in the Division I semi-final will be none other than the hosts of the competition, Colts: two teams who are diametrically opposed in every way in the sport. Where Nets might be lacking in speed they compensate in size.
Nets will have to contend with the agility of guards, Shelroy Thomas, Sheldon Thomas, Dave Causway and Nikkoloi Smith. Those four young guards are as good as any in the sport and have literally ran teams out of gas trying to chase them across the court.
They are full of energy and bring their up-tempo nature to bear on every game. In the front court of Colts, veteran forwards, Nicko Fraser and Dane Kendall get the work done in the paint, which often makes Colts an equally balanced team.
Conversely, Nets relied heavily on the size of Mortimer Williams, Fabian Johnson and Drumson McCulley to dominate the offensive and defensive ‘boards’, giving them the major percentage of ball possession and allowing them to control the pace of the game.
That will be difficult against the running game of Colts. But Nets guard, Hodayah Stewart will try to counter the agility of Colts’ front court quartet with his own manoeuvring in the area. The game is expected to be an extremely competitive encounter.
The other Division I semi-final brings together Ravens, undoubtedly one of the best basketball institutions in Guyana, and Pepsi Sonics, another structurally good club, for a clash that will be just as good as the first game.
Ravens had admitted earlier this year that it was in a slump, but the club seemed to be out of that phase with their recent performances. From the Brusche’s Classic some months ago to the PG II, Ravens have been unbeaten in basketball in Linden and Georgetown.
Their impressive run speaks to their return to the pinnacle of basketball in Guyana. Pepsi Sonics have been just as impressive with a top three Georgetown League finish this year that makes the club one to beat. The game is a top-tier battle for supremacy.
The bottom line is that the Final Four of the Colts/Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) fixture is as good a basketball schedule as one could get in Georgetown. It is the caveat for a man who had lived for basketball and in whose honour the competition is being held. PG II Final Four will ignite CASH tonight.
The semis in the Division III contest begins at 5pm with Trinity Grid Holdings Pacesetters taking on Pepsi Sonics and Colts challenging Plaisance Guardians in the same Division in the following game. The winners of each game will play for the title tomorrow night.
