The prime suspect in Wednesday night’s shooting death of Godfrey Jhaggroo at Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara has surrendered.
Police said that the suspect, who was accompanied by an attorney, turned himself in at around 17:00 hrs at La Grange Police Station.
A police official said that charges are likely by Monday and that the owner of the firearm could also face charges.
Police have also detained a member of the Belle Vue Community Police Group (CPG), a bar owner who lives next to the victim, and the father of the alleged shooter. They have also confiscated a shotgun.
Sources allege that the suspect shot Jhaggroo, a 20-year-old labourer, at the back of the head with a neighbor’s licensed shotgun. He is said to be the son of a senior community policing group member.
Residents have alleged that the shooting occurred shortly after a neighbor, who owns a rum shop, intervened in an argument between Jhaggroo and his mother.
It is alleged that the neighbour went into the mother’s yard and struck Jhaggroo with a piece of wood. The injured man reportedly hurled back the same piece of wood which struck the neighbour’s daughter.
Kaieteur News was told that the rum shop owner complained to members of the Community Policing Group about the incident.
According to an eyewitness, a vehicle with two members of the neighbourhood policing group caught up with Jhaggroo on the public road.
Persons close to the scene said at least one warning shot was fired before Jhaggroo was shot in the back.
The victim’s mother claimed that he was heading to the Wales Police Station to make a complaint and she later heard that he had been shot.
Relatives later learnt that he was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where the alleged shooter fled after learning the wounded man had died.
