Famed guests of honour Dwayne DeRosario, Garth Nelson, arrive today
They have hosted legendary football star, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known to the world as Pelé, and Guyanese of all walks of life had lined the streets of Georgetown for a first hand glimpse of the man dubbed ‘King of Football.’ Today, the principals of the Kashif and Shanghai football organization will once again break new grounds when they travel to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri to escort top Canadian soccer player, Dwayne DeRosario and football administrator, Garth Nelson, here as guests of the current Chico K&S Secondary School Football Championships currently underway.
The duo arrives in Guyana at around 15:30 hrs today and will address a tight itinerary starting with a courtesy call on the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony, at 17:00 hrs. The team will also engage Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam at that forum. Consequently, the K&S Directors will host a media briefing at 18:00 hrs before heading for the Princess Hotel International, Providence EBD, where the two visitors will be housed during their brief stay. Later in the evening, at 20:30 hrs, the guests will journey to the Le Meridian, Pegasus Hotel for a reception.
The famed footballer will leave for Linden at 09:00hrs tomorrow morning and will facilitate a coaching clinic with youngsters in that community before addressing several other engagements including a lunch meeting with Linden officials at the Watooka Guest House at 14:00hrs. The team will then head for the MSC Ground to witness the two matches in the competition.
The first encounter witnesses Wismar/Christianburg Secondary School taking on New Silver City, while Leonora Secondary tackles McKenzie High. The team departs Guyana early Monday morning.
A player of no mean order, DeRosario is born to Guyanese parentage and has notched up several lucrative awards during his illustrious career. He has clinched the coveted Canadian Footballer of the Year award on 4 separate occasions while copping the MLC Cup MVP in 2001.
DeRosario was also voted Toronto FC Player of the Year in 2007 and 2009 as well as the MLS Most Valuable Player in 2011. The prolific ball weaver also earlier secured the MLS Goal of the Year award two years in a row, in 2004 and 2005. Among his other awards are MLS Golden Boot 2011 and elite spots among the MLS Best XI every year from 2005 to 2011.
With a carrier spanning some 14 years, DeRosario comprises an integral part of the Canadian National Team and is currently preparing to represent his country at 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Mr. Nelson’s interaction with Guyanese footballers commenced in 2000 when he took Kayode McKinnon to Spain for a tryout. One year later, he sponsored Randolph Jerome and Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard on a similar expedition to the USA.
In 2002, Mr. Nelson penned an autobiography of McKinnon and that book now forms a part of those in the Linden library. The hard working football executive then secured 2nd division contracts in the USA for Nigel Codrington, Pollard, Randolph Jerome, Shaun Cameron and Kevin Beaton. He was also instrumental in securing the Major League Soccer contract for Gregory Richardson in 2004. Maybe, his most sterling achievement occurred shortly afterwards when he introduced beach soccer to Guyana and formed the Linden based, Beach Soccer Football Association.
Meanwhile, the K&S schools continue today with a double header at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground from 4:00pm. Dolphin oppose Charlestown Secondary in the first match, which will be followed by Digicel Schools tourney runner-up, Waramadong facing North Ruimveldt at 6:00pm in what promises to be a keenly contested match-up.
