The Deputy Head Teacher attached to Tutorial Academy Secondary in Region Six is categorically refuting reports published in this newspaper to the effect that she consumed alcohol during the students’ Christmas party. The article stated that the teacher’s alcohol consumption was done at a level where she became heavily intoxicated.
The article stated, “According to reports, the senior teacher was seen imbibing vodka and orange juice and her colleagues started to observe the strange behaviour. The teacher was escorted to the head teacher’s office after which the matter was reported to the Department of Education in New Amsterdam where a full investigation has been launched. Kaieteur News understands that it is a norm at the school for students to sneak alcohol and drinks into the school premises during Christmas parties, fairs and other events where there is a mass gathering.
The senior teacher is expected to be charged by the Disciplinary Committee of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) for use of alcohol while on duty. The charge is ‘Conduct unbecoming of a teacher.”
But subsequent information received by this newspaper suggests that the only factual information reflected in the article was that there was a Christmas party at the school.
The teacher cleared her name from what she referred to as a disdainful situation. She even told Kaieteur News that she generally doesn’t consume alcohol.
She stressed that the party had music, food and only non alcoholic beverages.
Emotional to the extent that tears started to trickle along her check, the teacher explained “I have been working at that school since 1998 and never was there a situation where alcohol was found in the school. Moreover, even if the thought enters the minds of my students, once I’m around they wouldn’t dare…they know the kind of person I am”.
The teacher further explained that she is the sports secretary attached to the Guyana Teachers’ Union “and even when there is a sports event I don’t partake in alcohol consumption. When events are held at the stadium where I am fully permitted to drink I don’t, moreso to drink amongst minors at the place where I earn a living… never would I!”
According to the teacher, the reporter, Leon Suseran, also of Region 6, knows her very well and could have called her to confirm such reports “…if any was indeed made. He could have called the school and done the same.”
The reporter has since explained that he received information from the students who attend the school. Kaieteur News will be conducting its own investigation into the standard journalistic procedure followed by the reporter.
This newspaper unreservedly apologizes for any embarrassment and inconvenience caused as a result of the publication.
