A squabble over a radio between two inmates of the East La Penitence Night Shelter has resulted in 50-year-old Eustace Reece being fined $10,000 by the Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Reece admitted to assaulting his fellow inmate Bhimraj Ramkishore on December 16 at 1 Arapaima Road, Georgetown.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that Reece believed that the man had stolen his radio, and on the day in question, Ramkishore was sleeping when Reece in an effort to wake him, dealt him several cuffs to the head.
Reece however related that he did not hit the man. “I woke him up because I did had a radio set and I sleep and wake up and see it missing. Long before, one time when it did missing he did move it, so I went to him and woke him up.”
The Chief Magistrate then asked if he had assaulted the man, to which he responded “No, I pushed him to his head. I suspect him. Ma’am it hurts when you work hard to get your thing and people just pick it up. Me and this man is good friend.”’
“I just wanted to know where is my thing. I does work hard from eight in the morning to ten in the night.”
The Magistrate then fined the accused $10,000 to which he said he did not have. She explained to him that he has 21 days to post the fine, the alternative to which would be two weeks imprisonment.
