GPSU commences mass city protest today
The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) is not letting up on its quest to be heard by the Administration against the annual arbitrary imposition of wage hikes for public service workers. The union has notified that it has received permission for mass city protest which commences today until the end of the year.
Protest action has been ongoing for the past few weeks.
The Union notified its members and followers that the march is one hour before noon (11:00hrs), on the following route: Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Bourda, proceeding east then south along Vlissengen Road, West in Brickdam, North into Avenue of the Republic (Western half) continuing into Main Street, east into Lamaha Street, south into Main Street, east into Church Street, south into New Garden Street into Shiv Chanderpaul Drive to conclude at Guyana Public Service Union.
The approval and the variation in the intended route would be discussed at an Executive Council and General Council Meetings.
The union noted that for some 12 years the government has been imposing increases on public workers without the relevant discussions with the union. The new trend, they posited, is the “meager” five percent imposed on the workers.
Public servants have since mounted countrywide protest with public service being limited as a result of strike action by disgruntled employees.
