Specifically for youth development; affiliates challenged to do more
Christmas cheer came to the affiliates of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) in a tangible form on Wednesday evening last when that entity held a get together at the residence of President, K. A Juman Yassin.
The contribution Yassin informed was specifically for development of young and potential athletes.
“We need to look at the young people, we need and you need to look at your talent wherever they are and help. So our contribution basically is for the development of the young athletes and for sports.”
GOA Treasurer Garfield Wiltshire in remarks stated that the GOA Executive made a conscious decision to put funds towards the development of all sports, positing that it’s important that athletes are developed with an eye on meaningful participation at the upcoming international games.
In reviewing the year 2013, Yassin while acknowledging that strides were made is of the view that much more can be done and challenged the associations/federations to focus in that direction.
“I hope that next year much more could be done. But what is really needed is for the respective executives of the associations to really get together and try to push, I know you are pushing and you say you don’t have facilities, we don’t have funds but at the end of the day we can’t give up.”
The GOA head told the representatives of the associations which included president’s and secretaries, that they need to chart a course while noting at the level of the GOA their goal through its members is, in the first instance, the South American Youth Games in Chile, in March.
“Those games will have top countries, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and our athletes have the opportunity of qualifying for the Pan American Games in 2015. The Commonwealth Games will be at the end of July in Glasgow and we need at the GOA need to see what has been the performance in the South American Games for selection to go to Glasgow.”
GOA Executive members, Gokarn Randhani and Garfield Wiltshire have been appointed respective Chef-de-Mission of the South American Youth Games and Commonwealth Games.
Yassin reminded his members that the GOA wants to support them in their development but they must also help themselves. In this vein, Yassin told those present that they need to let the Ministry of Sport know what they are doing in terms of programmes.
“You need to ensure that the Ministry of sports know what your itinerary and plans are. You have these games coming up, I believe most associations are not doing that and we really need to do that. At the end
of the day you may or may not get assistance, but if you don’t get, at least you’ll be able to say you put your things in. so put whatever provisions in the pot and see how it comes out.”
Yassin also reminded that Rio 2016 is just the corner and most associations have not yet submitted their plans and proposals despite being requested to do so.
“I am asking you to make a resolution for the New Year that you send the names of persons who can qualify for scholarships. You may send a lot of names and they may not get it but the important thing is once you send and we submit there’s an opportunity a few of them will get, so we need to do that.”
The Guyana Netball Association, Guyana Rugby Football Union, Guyana Karate Association, Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Guyana Badminton Association, Guyana Amateur Swimming Association, Guyana Amateur Swimming Association, Guyana Cycling Federation, Guyana Squash Association and Guyana Table Tennis Association among others, benefitted.
