Former Deputy Commissioner Derrick Thompson passed away yesterday morning at the age of 75 at his South Ruimveldt Gardens residence, after a brief period of illness.
He was born on November 13, 1938, and although he came from humble beginnings, many fondly related that he rose above his circumstances and managed to become a man of great accomplishments.
Thompson joined the Guyana Police Force in the early 1960’s where with dedication he served for over three decades, until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure, the force noticed his diligence and dedication and as such sent him on many training courses in the United Kingdom.
One of his most outstanding achievements was in 1968, when he was sent to the Hendon Police Training School in the UK. Thompson out-performed his international colleagues and copped the much coveted baton of honour.
Thompson continued his upward movement and at one point served as the ‘A’ Division Commander. He had also received the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM).
After he retired from the force in 1992, Thompson moved to Saint Kitts and Nevis where he took up the post of Police Commissioner up until 1994.
Thompson then returned home and worked with the Ministry of Home Affairs up until 1997 when he became the Chief Security Officer of the Guyana Elections Commissions (GECOM).
Amidst his many professional achievements, Thompson was also a dedicated family man. In 1965 he married to Thelma Hamlin and that union produced six children. Thompson was also a grandfather of 15.
He will be remembered as a valued member of the Caribbean Regional Security System, as well as a devoted member of the Smith Memorial Congregational Church.
