Just two days after turning in a masterful performance to clinch a come from behind 2-1 victory over Uitvlugt Secondary School, Annandale Secondary School turned in another classic display to dispose of Queens College 5-2 when action in the Chico/Kashif & Shanghai Secondary Schools Football Tournament continued at the Georgetown Football Club Ground, last evening.
Dimitri Clarke was scorching hot and his lone contribution in the West Coast game paled in comparison to his triple success last evening; he pierced the opposition’s berth in the 77th, 87th and 90th minute with support from Kristoff Stoll (56) in a display that snatched victory from the grasp of the QC team.
THE STAR OF THE SHOW! Dimitri Clarke’s team mates hoist him on their shoulders in appreciation of his late triple goal spree.
Annandale Secondary suffered a slight setback after one of their players inadvertently kicked in the wrong direction in a goal default situation while Kabian Daly’s 13th minute strike added to the default to push the losers’ tally to 2.
Brilliant sunshine for most of the day did not hold up and the players took to the field under a steady drizzle that eventually developed into a downpour. Undaunted, both teams engaged in aggressive football with Clarke looking threatening after several near misses at the opposition’s goal.
Daly then extricated himself from among a group, each battling to gain possession, and pasted the Annandale custodian to enthusiastic cheers from supporters. A determined Annandale fought back gamely and Stoll’s equalizer was indeed a joy to behold; he dribbled down the left flank and embarrassed the entire QC defensive line up and sliced the ball from an extremely difficult angle, yet managed to pierce the opposition’s berth.
Four minutes later, QC was back in the ascendency complements of the blunder. Stoll was a thorn in the opposition’s side and one of his early advances had success written all over it but for the lack of support from his team mates when he was overwhelmed by the opposition’s defenders. It was around that time that QC defenders increased their vigilance and made it extremely difficult for the Annandale strike crew.
If the first session was smoke, the second developed into a raging inferno as both teams heightened their efforts to stay in front. Apparently, the team from the East Coast suddenly discovered their opponent’s Achilles heel and within the space of ten minutes the score underwent a drastic change with Annandale riding high after Clarke’s feat, and Queen’s College battling furiously to recoup their advantage.
Any other day they might have succeeded but it was clear that the stage belonged to Dimitri Clarke and he utilized it to the maximum, not once, not twice but three times which in the end snatched victory from a deflated Queen’s College team.
Meanwhile, a power outage shortly after the conclusion of the first game, forced a lengthy delay of the feature game between St Georges and East Ruimveldt Secondary. Up to press time, that match was still being contested. Details will follow in a subsequent release.
