Two bandits on motorcycles yesterday snatched over $7.7M from two Accounts staffers of the Ministry of Public Works. The workers at the time were transporting payroll of the daily staffers of the Ministry.
Minister Robeson Benn told Kaieteur News yesterday that he was informed about
the robbery shortly after midday. Benn said that the employees were accompanied by an armed guard. He said that the vehicle they were in had just entered the compound of the Ministry at Fort Street, Kingston, when the men pounced. The minister said that he was told that the two men who were dressed as construction workers had been waiting at the gate for some time.
“The men were waiting at the gate of the ministry claiming that they were workers from the interior who came to uplift salaries,” the Minister said. However, police sources said that the men arrived at the location on CG motorcycles, which were parked at a shop nearby.
Kaieteur News was further told that when the vehicle entered the compound, the men assaulted a female security guard, and took away the firearm of the male guard who had accompanied the accounts clerks from the bank.
When asked about whether the ministry had any security camera, the Minister said that it did not. According to Benn, they would be relying on persons in the area that have surveillance cameras.
Benn noted that he has already notified the Finance Minister of the robbery, and a report will be issued today so that an investigation could commence and have the monies replaced.
Meanwhile, the police in a release said yesterday that the robbery happened sometime around 11:55h yesterday. According to the police, a female Assistant Accountant along with a female Accounts Clerk of the Ministry of Public Works, Fort Street, Kingston, accompanied by an armed Private Security Guard, were attacked and robbed of $7.7M by two men armed with handguns.
The police said that the victims had just returned to the Ministry after conducting business at a Bank and as their motor vehicle entered the compound the two armed men, who were in the compound, held them at gunpoint. The perpetrators took away the bags with the money from the two women and also took away the Security Guard’s .38 revolver and 7 rounds and escaped on a motor cycle. The two employees were taken to the police station for statement.
