DEAR EDITOR,
Among the basic tenets of the Constitution are freedom of speech, the freedom to associate and the freedom to worship. These are all sacred and countries that want to portray some semblance of upholding its laws should all encourage these freedoms.
It therefore goes without saying that we have all have to be tolerant of each other. Our views, our friends, our religion, our political allegiance, are all part of the democratic system that our beautiful country has been pushing to perfect.
It is against this background that I want to highlight a troubling observation I made over the weekend.
A number of friends are visiting and I was invited to dinner to the Princess Hotel and Casino in Providence.
Later that evening, we were at the casino where a few of the party decided to try their hands at the slot machines.
Somehow my attention was drawn to one of the machines which depicted an image that was most shocking.
It was what appeared to be an image of Lord Shiva.
To use the word shocking would be an understatement. With a significant section of country’s population Hindus, I am sure this is a slap in the face of the many who practice. How could the casino’s management allow this? Where is the gaming authority in this? Did its inspectors not see?
I condemn the casino for this and urge that the machine be removed. I am also asking that all religious organizations, including the Hindu community, which would promote tolerance and respect for each other, to condemn this.
In the spirit of this season, let’s do the right thing.
