Those bent on breaking the law and disturbing the peace in Berbice, especially over the Christmas season are in for some tough times. Commander of the police Berbice ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph is giving residents that assurance.
He says the police will adopt a zero tolerance against mischief makers. They will also pay special attention to those disturbing the peace by playing loud music. He stated that they will also turn up the heat on those who do not desist from lighting and throwing squibs and bombs.
The commander said that residents in Berbice feel that the police force needs to take tougher action against offenders who are bent on breaking the law. They have been constantly complaining about the chronic and unending disturbances being caused by those miscreants who are allowed to continue for the entire day and night disturbing the peace without much intervention from the relevant authorities despite numerous complaints.
The commander gave the assurance that the police are working to address the issue. He stated, “A number of persons have been dealt with already. Their ‘boom boxes’ have been seized whilst others have been placed before the courts. A number of persons believe that they are above the law, but we have news for them. Everybody will be treated the same way. We have a zero tolerance approach towards this matter.”
He is urging thepublic to inform the police and to report to any senior officer if the police do not take action.
About the contentious areas such as the loud music emanating from parked vehicles outside popular ‘hang out’ spots, along Main Street, New Amsterdam, Joseph stated that action is being taken and recently police have been monitoring those areas.
Residents in some areas of New Amsterdam, Canje, Corentyne and West Berbice have been constantly complaining about the disturbances in the areas without much success; however Commander Joseph plans to change the trend.
Dwellers in those areas have been hammering away in the letter columns as they complain about the noise nuisance and constant disturbances they have to endure on a regular basis cause by the various boom boxes. They stated that the laws must be applied where necessary and it is the responsibility of the Guyana Police Force to enforce the laws against noise nuisance, particularly, when reports are made at the police stations.
In respect to those bent on selling and lighting squibs and bombs during the Christmas season.
“Many of those persons were brought to books .The police will step up the campaign against those persons and they will be prosecuted.”
