– Ann Gordon’s dynasty continues
Kwakwani Secondary continued a fine tradition started under the skillful tutelage of Ann Gordon when they became the titans of schools’ basketball Sunday night after beating the nation’s leading institution, the University of Guyana at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Kwakwani defeated the University of Guyana (UG) 79-54 to win the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Titan Bowl, which including the eight best basketball-playing schools in the country for a weekend playoffs to ultimately decide the nation’s best.
Against their trademark defensive pressure, the school hailing from Region 10 was excellent on the glass and on both ends of the court to top the efforts of the University, which never really got things going as their top offensive players struggled.
Guard, Jonathon Pooran was again at his best, relentlessly penetrating the lane, but his passes fizzled to nothingness.
Shafeeq Thomas finished with 25 points while Domair Gladstone dropped 12 points in the win. Usually a top scorer, Leonard Primo did not contribute much to the score, but was a rebounding beast with 16 ‘boards’.
Pooran was the only player in double figures for UG with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds in the loss.
Meanwhile in the third place game, Linden Technical Institute (LTI) humiliated Bishops High School 90-62 with Terron Welch scoring 31 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals to get the Most Valuable Player award.
Dennis Niles scored 20 points, while Vibert Benjamin finished with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to blow away the Georgetown side.
Daniel Haynes had 26 points and 16 rebounds for Bishops while Marvin Durant had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
In addition to Welch gaining MVP honors, Pooran won the ‘Most Assists’ award, while Primo was the ‘Best Defensive Player’ of the tournament.
