A 23-year-old seaman was in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation last night after he was viciously hacked and stabbed by three men at Pigeon Island Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara.
Rajesh Mangra, called ‘Ricardo,’ a father of two, was chopped on the right hand and neck, and also sustained stab wounds to the stomach. He was still undergoing surgery up to late last night. A relative said that he is likely to lose the injured arm. A 13-year-old girl was also chopped on the right instep during the attack.
The suspects are all fishermen from the same area as the victim. One of them is known as ‘Terry’ and the other as ‘Sarwan.’ They are still at large.
Police have received reports that the suspects may have been retaliating after Mangra allegedly wounded one of their friends, identified as Baijkumal Boodram, around 14:00 hrs on Sunday.
However, Mangra’s reputed wife alleged that the attack stemmed from an argument that her spouse had with a boat captain over $25,000 that was owed to Mangra. She believes that the same boat captain sent the fishermen to attack her spouse.
According to police sources, Mangra was on a dam around 17:30 hrs when three men, armed with cutlasses and a knife attacked him.
Kaieteur News was told that Mangra sought refuge inside a woman’s house but the men pursued him, chopping and stabbing their victim.
Police ranks who were alerted about the incident took the wounded man to the GPHC.
Mangru’s spouse told Kaieteur News that he recently returned from sea and that he had a confrontation on Sunday with a boat captain who owed him $25,000.
She said that she calmed him down and that he was drinking with friends yesterday when the men attacked him.
