Every year around this time a group of individuals who make up the Enterprise Road Safety Association gives true meaning to the spirit of Christmas by donating from their modest earnings to the less fortunate residents of the Cheshire Home at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
The group, made up of mostly hire car drivers and other concerned villagers in Enterprise, have been undertaking this “duty” for the past 39 years.
According to Treasurer Lloyd Persaud, who has been a member of the association for over 40 years, it is a blessing to visit the Cheshire Home every year to play a part in the lives of those who could hardly help themselves.
He explained that it was way back in 1974 that the relationship between the Cheshire Home and the Enterprise Road Safety Association started.
“When we first came here, it wasn’t a building like this; it was a small building with a ramp. And in those days you hadn’t electricity and the Canadian government used to give gas lamp and nettings and these things.”
“Fortunately our late President John Narine got into contact with these people and we started about 1974,”Persaud told this newspaper.
The Cheshire Home is a non-profit facility which houses about 25 persons who were born with various forms of disability.
It was established in the early 1970s. Apart from an annual grant from the government, it has survived on the benevolence of individuals and groups both local and overseas.
According to the Enterprise Road Safety Association Treasurer, “Our organization has been blessed by the Lord to be standing up so many years and for that we are giving out what we can afford to handicap and needy children.”
Among the items donated by the organization are toiletries, food stuff and clothing. The organization also provides a special dinner for the residents.
He said that every year planning for the Cheshire Home visit commences as early as the month of June.
“All of us are very positive about this venture. Once the members hear about Cheshire home, it is like you get a new baby born,” Persaud stated.
He said that the staff at the home has always been cooperative and a pleasure to work with.
Wanda Jagan, a staff who received the items on behalf of the home, expressed heartfelt thanks, noting that the donation will go a far way in making life at the facility much more pleasurable.
“I know the children will benefit from it,” she said.
Jagan, who has been at Cheshire Home for the past 10 years, told Kaieteur News that other organizations and individuals have been following the lead of the Enterprise Road Safety Association and life has become so much easier for both residents and staff.
