A father of four was stabbed to death at around 19:30hrs yesterday, during a brawl with his estranged wife’s fiancé who sustained a chop wound to the head.
Dead is 42-year-old Carl Garnett of Lot 229 Section ‘B’ South Sophia, who is employed as an electrical journeyman with the Guyana Power and Light (GPL). He was reportedly stabbed five times to the chest and once in the upper thigh.
The injured man has been identified as Akeem James and the confrontation occurred at James’ home at Lamaha Springs, also known as the Joint Services Scheme.
James was treated at the GPHC before being taken into police custody.
Garnett had reportedly gone to James’ home with a cutlass while James was armed with a knife.
Kaieteur News understands that Garnett and wife have been separated for a few years, and that their divorce is pending.
During this time, Garnett had been living with a woman who is seven months pregnant, while Garnett’s wife has been engaged to James for several months now.
Glevia Cadogan, the expectant mother with whom Garnett had been living with for more than two years, told this newspaper that the man has always been worried about his children, and that he would repeatedly call to ensure that they were okay.
“This would be my first child fuh him, but Carl get a boy and three girls. They does live with he wife and her man,” Cadogan said.
She explained that Garnett would call to speak with his children repeatedly, but James, his wife’s fiancé, would not allow him to talk to the children.
“When the man call to talk to the children dem, this woman (‘s) husband doesn’t allow he, so the same thing he do today (yesterday) so my gentleman (Garnett) get vex and went over deh. I couldn’t stop he,” Cadogan said.
She said that Garnett had gone over to his wife’s Lamaha Springs, Georgetown home with a cutlass strapped to his waist.
Cadogan said that shortly after this, she received a call from Garnett’s daughter, informing her of a clash between James and Garnett.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Cadogan said that she learnt that Garnett had died from multiple stab wounds.
“I hear dem saying that Akeem didn’t have any weapons, but Carl had nuff, nuff stab wounds on he body, I see that fuh me self.” Mrs. Garnett declined to speak with this publication.
However, Kaieteur News learnt that Mr. Garnett had gone over to his wife’s home on Wednesday last, and that an argument ensued between him and James.
Mrs. Garnett was reportedly overheard telling relatives that “Carl does always insult Akeem, but Akeem don’t tell he anything.”
Mrs. Garnett was saying that after the father of her four children came over last evening, an argument started between the two men. This led to a scuffle during which James was chopped, and Garnett was stabbed several times.
“Akeem de telling he that he should leave we alone, because he didn’t care about de children dem when he leff we, suh he shouldn’t care about them now,” Mrs. Garnett said.
