Wiltshire clan dominate on Final day
The Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one sponsor Digicel concluded with exciting play in the Farfan & Mendes Junior Christmas Tournament which was held at the Georgetown Club Ltd. Squash courts with the Wiltshire siblings, 10-year-old Shomari and his sisters Larissa and Akeila making a clean sweep for the Wiltshire clan yesterday.
Several of the country’s top junior players were in action on the final day of play and they did not disappoint the parents and spectators who turned up to witness the matches. At the end of the competition the presentation of prizes was done by Karen Gomes a representative of Farfan & Mendes.
Shomari Wiltshire came up against Matthew Phang. The winner in this match would be the champion in this category since they had both played unbeaten up to this point. Shomari won the first game 11 – 8. Matthew led for most of the second game and had game balls at 10 –9 and 11 – 10 but Shomari kept his nerve and won the second game 13 – 11.
Matthew was always in the lead in the third game but this time there would be no coming back for Shomari as Matthew won this game 11 – 7. In the fourth game Shomari jumped out to a 7 – 1 lead and it looked as if it was all over for Matthew but he showed great fighting spirit and clawed his way back into the game. He won the next six points to even the score at 7 all and it was back and forth thereafter but Matthew closed out the game 11 – 9 to set up a deciding fifth and final game.
Matthew led 3 – 2 but Shomari won the next six points to move to 8 – 3 and even though Matthew got a couple more points Shomari was able to close out the match 11 – 6.
Larissa Wiltshire and Taylor Fernandes continued their long lasting rivalry. Matches between these two go back and forth. Yesterday it was Larissa who proved to be the stronger player. Larissa won the first game 11 – 5 and the second game would prove to be crucial one as Larissa was able to win this game 12 – 10. This seemed to take most of the fight out of Taylor and Larissa was able to win the third game 11 – 5.
The final match of the tournament also featured two unbeaten players. Alec Melville was up against Akeila Wiltshire. Alec had improved tremendously over the last few months and Akeila would have to be at her best to beat him. Alec won the first game 11 – 9 and at 9 – 5 up and also having two game balls at 10 – 8 it seemed as if he was on course to victory but Akeila clawed her way back into the game and was able to win it 12 – 10.
Akeila was always up in the third and won this game 11 – 7 and at 10 – 7 up in the fourth it seemed as if it was all over for Alec but he showed true grit and determination and won the next five points to take the fourth game 12 – 10. Akeila came out in the fifth game with renewed energy winning the first six points and even though Alec made a valiant effort to get back into the game the lead would prove to be too much with Akeila winning the deciding game 11 – 6.
