Christmas cheer is alive in the community of Siriki in the Pomeroon River, thanks to a visit by Santa Claus, who distributed gifts to approximately 300 children.
In the absence of snow, Santa Claus did not use his sleigh driven by reindeer but rather, Air Services Limited (ASL) helicopter to access the remote community. This was quite a fascinating sight for the children who are accustomed to motor boats and corial.
Captain Mazahar Ally did the honours of piloting the helicopter into the riverain community so Santa Claus could have plastered smiles on the children’s faces and hope in their hearts. The Rotary Club of Demerara sponsored the Christmas programme.
According to Annette Arjoon-Martins of ASL, “We support hinterland communities all year-round in various ways, and this exercise, in partnership with Rotary, was to give an extra boost to the Christmas spirit in the Siriki community.”
She recalled that on December 10, last ASL helicopter landed on Siriki School playground at 11:30hrs and was immediately thronged by hundreds of waiting youngsters.
Siriki resident Ena Rambarran said, “Many of the kids had never seen an aircraft,
much less a helicopter, so they were overjoyed, and then to have Santa arrive with the gifts from Rotary was even more special. It made their Christmas.”
According to Rotarian Juman Yassin, “We are involved every year with this kind of Christmas outreach in communities closer to town. To have this kind of contact this year with a more far-flung community was particularly satisfying.”
