Under the theme, “Committed to our Community,” the Lions Club of Georgetown D’urban Park yesterday celebrated its 20th year as a functioning unit upholding the pride and dignity of Lions worldwide.
The club headed by its president, Deborah Backer, reminisced on its humble beginnings and patted itself on the back for the strides made and the positive changes it has been able to impact on the lives of many.
“Lions” is a worldwide charitable society devoted to social and international service, taking its membership primarily from business and professional groups. Lions’ International has over 45,500 clubs and more than 1,368,683 members in 205 countries around the world and was founded by Melvin Jones in 1917.
The Lions Club of Georgetown D’urban Park received its Charter on December 14, 1993 complete with 25 service minded individuals, 11 of whom were former Lionesses. This Club was sponsored by the Lions Club of Ruimveldt.
In keeping with its mandate to serve, which perfectly coincides with its motto “Service in Action,” the Club has, over the years, embarked on many service projects arising from identified needs in its area of service. These include; in South Ruimveldt and Meadow Brook.
The Club has been able to carry out its work further afield as well.
The Club’s service activities are executed under three umbrella programs; Education and Youth; Health & Service and Sight Conservation as well as Work with the Blind.
During the years the Lions D’urban Park has donated a number of white canes and eye products to visually impaired persons. Other works with the blind include ‘sight conversation,’ a service activity introduced in 1994 as the association’s flagship project worldwide. This event is commemorated in October of each year. To date, the Club has screened the eyes of more than 4,000 students and provided spectacles for over 200.
Other activities include life skills sessions, counseling and an annual spelling bee competition.
The Club carried out a dental health clinic in Sophia and delivered blood pressure kits for the elderly as well as hosted a walk for Diabetes Awareness Month, observed annually in November.
There was also an environmental awareness and clean up exercise held in collaboration with the Avocado Youth Group and Lancers Youth Group in the East Ruimveldt area.
In an anniversary message, Charter President, Deborah Backer said “On the occasion of the 20th anniversary it gives me a great sense of pride as I reflect on how our Club has grown from twenty five (25) charter members to become one of the largest Clubs in Guyana. More important to us is the invaluable service projects our Club has undertaken over these years thereby being true to our motto, We Serve.”
In a letter of congratulations, Lions Club International President Barry J. Palmer advised the Club to use the opportunity of its anniversary to reflect on what was accomplished and look forward to new opportunities to serve.
He penned, “Your compassion and dedication to reaching out to others is what has kept Lions Clubs International a global leader in service for nearly a century. Your Club was chartered by caring, concerned people who realized that the power of working together as a team far exceeds what we can accomplish alone. Together, we can make a difference in countless lives in our community and around the world. Together, we can realize the dream of a better world through service. Together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”
Regional Chairman, Sean Noel and District Governor, Patrick Taylor also extended congratulations
“The exemplary character, grit and determination shown by Durban Park Lions Club members in moving from a fledgling status to being the premier Lions Club in Region 1 within twenty years is a testimony quality of projects executed.”
Lions Club of Georgetown D’urban Park Acknowledged the financial assistance of Digicel, Somwaru’s, Citizen’s Bank; Camex and Nigel’s Supermarket.
