The Jamaican-based airline Fly Jamaica is expected to start its once a week nonstop Toronto, Canada flights come next Wednesday. The airline’s 757 Boeing is expected to land in Guyana on Tuesday morning and depart for the North American country on Wednesday 08:00hours, arriving 13:00hours local time.
Trips to the Canadian destination were expected to commence last summer, but setbacks saw start up being pushed back to November and now December. Airline officials have stated however that flights on the Canadian route are well underway, while in-bound flights are filled to capacity.
The airline also commenced New York bound flights in late September, thrice weekly, in-transit Jamaica. The airline says that it is offering compatible airfares, with in-bound New York flights also filled to capacity. The airline is offering lowest airfares now to Christmas, to New York at US$302 and lowest to Canada US$366 tax included.
Officials say that the Canadian route is very important to link locals to those in the diaspora. Caribbean Airlines recently dominated the Canadian route, as well as the US route. Ticket fares had reached exorbitant prices when the Trinidad-owned airline capitalized following the pull out of US-owned Delta Airlines and the fall out of low fare carriers EZJet and RedJet. Yesterday also saw the return of US-based Travelspan to Guyanese shores, bringing more competition to the much plied GT/NY route.
