– Titans clear after three blowouts
The Bishops High School survived a late rally from Marian Academy to win a humdinger Friday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when Youth Basketball Guyana bounced hosted the Titan Bowl III featuring the eight top basketball-playing schools.
Bishops High School won 49-47 after holding a 14-point lead in the first half of the game against a young Marian squad, which held its own against the more formidable Bishops line-up that were pushed to the limit.
Marian made an early run to start the second half, which led to a 40-38 lead
with little over three minutes remaining in the game. However, Daniel Ramlagan ignited a 6-0 run, scoring four points to recapture the lead for good for Bishops High School.
But Marian were not without chances in crunch-time. With the game tied on 44 and 1:50 left in regulation time, Marian turned over the ball in heavily contested shots, which spoke directly to their inexperience in such situations.
Ramlagan ended with 11 points while Marvin Durant added a game high 13 points for Bishops High School. Forward, Daniel Haynes, who had a huge block-shot in the game, ended with six points and 12 rebounds for Marian Academy.
Meanwhile, in the other games, Kwakwani Secondary easily disposed of St. Roses High School 58-27 with Shafeeq Thomas scoring 13 points. Orwin Samuels was a rebounding beast with 15 boards for Kwakwani in the one-sided contest. Damair Gladston and Troy David also contributed 11 and 10 points respectively to the win.
The University of Guyana also blew out President College 66-44 in their game; Jonathan Pooran had 13, while Shaka Codrington scored 12 points in the win. Fonsie James and Orin Thomas each had 10 points apiece to contribute to the win.
Shakeel Adonis was the only player in double figures for President’s College with 10 points.
The top basketball-playing institutions in the country continued to separate themselves when the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) dismantled the Government Technical Institute (GTI) for a 65-33 win. The game was another one-sided affair.
Despite the finishing skill of GTI guard, Darrol Williams, who ended with 19 of their 33 points, and the defence of Lasar Richards, who is a beast on the glass, LTI bounced to an easy win owed to its on-court and bench depth.
Dennis Niles finished with 22 points for LTI while Terron Welch scored 17 points, completed 10 steals and grabbed eight rebounds.
