3rd edition of the GBA/DDL Gatorade, /Pepsi/Diamond Mineral Water, U-16 Boxing C/ship
By Michael Benjamin
They might have only recently entered the sport but two Barticians, Stevie DePrado and his sibling, Stephen DePrado, shrugged aside their inexperience behind the (fistic) wheels and crashed into their respective opponents, Romel Maxwell (YABG) and Anthony Gomes (YA) and drove off with convincing victories when the curtains went up on the inaugural day of the 3rd edition of the GBA/DDL Gatorade, /Pepsi/Diamond Mineral Water, U-16 Boxing Championship at the
Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym yesterday afternoon.
Fighting in the 110-114lbs category, Stevie entered his bout with flailing fists but was met by an equally enthusiastic Romel Maxwell and a delightful exchange had the small crowd screaming in delight. It was a vicious toe to toe encounter with both boxers slugging it out in centre ring. The action continued in the second round and indeed the two pugilists behaved as though they had an old grudge to settle. Midway into the second stanza, the Bartician assumed the control when he unleashed several unanswered blows to his opponent’s head shortly before the bell. DePrado then resumed the onslaught at the start of the final round but Maxwell refused to be bullied and gave as much as he received. It was really a delightful bout and the audience was undecided of the winner; the judges voted in favour of DePrado.
Stevie’s sibling, Stephen, also fought in the 110-114lbs class and approached his bout in a no nonsense mood. He laced Maxwell with several unorthodox blows which forced the referee to twice institute the mandatory 8 count. Gomes made it into the second stanza but 59secs into that round he ran into the force of De ‘Prado’ and referee, Romona Agard, performed the duty of traffic cop and parked him least he received severe damage.
Earlier, Isaiah Moore (HEBG) continued to devastate his opponents when he disposed of another Bartician, Maziel Ali, in just 20secs of their 75-79lbs affair. Ali never stood a chance as Moore rushed out, delivered several crunching head shots and it was all over. Kevin Mullings (HEBG) also continued in winners’ row and turned in a classy display that earned him a majority verdict over Shaquancy Wright (EBG) in their 55-59lbs clash. Mullings is certainly a special talent that if nurtured, could develop into the kind of force that could do this country proud a few years down the line.
In other results, another Mullings of the HEBG, this time Kevon, defeated his gym mate, Anson Wolfe in the 75-79lbs category while Devon Armstrong (HEBG), fighting in the 95-99lbs division, dealt Shamar Howard (YABG) several clouts that sent him reeling for the referee to institute the mandatory eight count. The latter boxer lasted out the first round but after a one two combination landed on his temple early in the second stanza, the referee called in the ringside nurse who after a cursory examination decided to call the bout off after just 4secs had expired. She later explained that the affected boxer was breathing erratically which prompted her decision.
Ossapho Barker (YABG) failed to show up for his 85-89lbs bout with Stephon Edwards (HEBG) and gifted the latter boxer with a win by walkover while Dishon Elcock (EBG) punched his way to a majority verdict over Ezekiel Benjamin (HEBG).
The action resumes at 11:00hrs this morning when the various champions will be determined. Subsequently GBA officials will host their prize giving ceremony where several corporate entities and deserving individuals will be acknowledged for their contribution towards the development of the sport.
