The operating hours for speedboats plying the Vreed-en-Hoop to Georgetown route have increased to counter the increasing traffic congestion on the East Bank Demerara thoroughfare.
According to a Public Works Ministry official, night operation was introduced on December 1 to help reduce traffic congestion during the peak hours along the East Bank Demerara corridor that also accommodates traffic destined for West Bank and West Coast Demerara.
Speedboats are now allowed to operate from 5:30hrs to 20:00hrs daily. This new operating schedule has been well received by operators of the 17 speedboats that ply the route, as well as the travelling public.
The official related that on a daily basis, between 550 and 1,000 passengers make full use of this system.
Safety is also a major part of this operation and as such it is mandatory that all boats are equipped with lights.
One passenger related to this newspaper that travelling to Wales, West Bank Demerara is usually a hectic and long exercise but the new schedule has significantly reduced the stress associated with getting home on a daily basis.
“I used to have to stand and wait for hours for a bus to go home because I come off work late…then you does be in that traffic for another long time…so I am grateful that the speedboat working late…since then I reaching home early,” the man said.
Meanwhile, a speedboat operator said he is pleased with the extended time because it will mean extra cash for him. The operator said the initiative was ‘good and timely’ since it is the Christmas season and a lot of people are travelling.
