– donates $1M to Linden school and life jackets for ferry boats
The Physical Education Department of the Wismar/Christianburg Secondary School in Linden got a much needed boost when Digicel presented Principal of the school, Cleveland Thomas, with a $1M cheque, on Thursday.
Making the presentation was Gavin Hope, the events and Sponsorship Manager for Digicel.
Thomas expressed gratitude to Digicel. He said that he was very impressed
by the gesture. He added that he hoped that the entity would continue to support the school and that the money would be used to upgrade physical education facilities at the school, especially football.
The school had won the Digicel Schools football Championships for the second consecutive year.
Last year Digicel presented the school with a $500,000 cheque, but decided to double the amount this time around.
The cheque was presented by Gavin Hope who said that as the winner of the first prize, the school was encouraged by Digicel to identify a project for development, which the entity would fund.
He said that the $1M donated by Digicel was expected to complete the project.
Digicel also donated life jackets to the operators of the five ferry services in Linden. Each ferry service received 15 Digicel-branded life jackets.
“Because of the recent increase in riverain accidents, we decided to do something to try and make river travel safer, so we contacted the Speedboat Association and got the names of the various operators.
We would hope that persons using the ferries would use the lifejackets and adhere
to the maritime rules for their own safety.
“We cannot give to all the boats, but we would try to do the best we could, to enhance the safety of those persons who are forced to use the waterways,” Hope said.
“I think it’s a wonderful donation by Digicel. This would certainly go a long way in helping us to ensure the safety of our passengers, Digicel is certainly doing a lot for people here, we are very grateful,” Colin Henry of Rigby’s Boat Service declared.
Earlier in the day Hope and his team had travelled to Ituni where they visited the Howell Wilson Primary School.
“We brought early Christmas to the children of Ituni, by taking some gifts and Christmas goodies for the children at the Howell Wilson Primary School- we also spent some time there with them.
“Then we came to Linden and we repeated the gesture at the Good Sheppard Academy, where we gave out some toys to the children there.
We try to touch as many lives and communities around this period, which is a period of goodwill and giving” Digicel’s Events and Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope said. (Enid Joaquin)
