Dear Editor,
I refer to the article entitled “Where is the Mandela in our leaders?’ by Dr. Asquith Rose and Harish S. Singh in your December 11, 2013 edition. Not being from the dominant races of Guyana, I think that without prejudice I can honestly answer that question. One only needs to look at the following similarities between Nelson Mandela and Dr. Cheddie Jagan:
Mandela was locked up for 27 years by a minority government.
Jagan was locked out for 28 years by a minority government.
Like Mandela, Jagan stopped a race war by refusing to immediately replace the dominance of his predecessors in the security forces.
Like Mandela, Jagan stopped a race war by forgiving the injustices of his predecessors and, going further than Mandela, declining to call for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the architects of political assassinations.
Like Mandela, Jagan was an honest, caring and incorruptible politician.
Like Mandela, Jagan promoted peace, equality and harmony.
Like Mandela, Jagan was not corrupt, greedy or spiteful and was never interested in personal wealth.
Like Mandela, Jagan was for justice and equality and did not use his power to marginalize any ethnic groups or promote ethnic superiority.
Like Mandela, Jagan harboured no ill-feelings, bore no malice or envy, and was forgiving.
Dr. Kingsley Harrop
