Dear Editor,
We have seen the recent appointment of Ms. Sooba to the position of Town Clerk of Georgetown where several more qualified and experienced candidates have been overlooked and unceremoniously cast aside by a stubborn and rigid regime that is embroiled in corruption and nepotism left, right and center. This pattern of wanton and unbecoming behavior has a significant negative effect on the people, especially the young professionals in Guyana. It goes to show that they do not have any regard for higher education and this is why they have allowed UG and other educational institutions to collapse. It is also very clear that this cabal does not want an educated population because of fear that they would rise-up and challenge them. Their goal is to keep the workers in ignorance and poverty by paying them slave-like wages and denying them proper jobs.
The passing over of more qualified and experienced men and women and appointing Ms. Sooba, who is less qualified and less experienced as the Town Clerk of the country’s largest city is insulting and revolting to the residents of Georgetown. It also has a serious negative effect on this country and this is not only happening in the local government arena but in almost every government department.
It is clear for everyone to see that the PPP has reduced Guyana to mediocrity. Ms. Sooba is just one of many unqualified PPP hacks who are placed in senior positions to manage institutions without any prior management skills.
In this ruling cabal, everyone is somehow interconnected and interweaved into this fabric of corruption and nepotism throughout government. We have a Minister for example whose sister in law does not have a degree but holds a very senior position and is being paid a very high salary above and beyond what UG graduates are being paid in her Ministry. We have several inexperienced and unqualified permanent secretaries who are either related to a minister or are married to someone who is a sister of a minister or who has some other relationship with a senior official in the cabal.
We also have a relative of a senior official who is earning a huge salary he would not otherwise earn in North America, the Caribbean or anywhere else to manage the IT project. He would not even earn that amount of money in the Middle East where in Dubai and Qatar many high-tech companies are paying top dollars to get foreigners to work for them.
He is working on the IT cable project where there is no accountability and where there is no return for investment for the taxpayers’ money to the people. This is yet another shady project mired in controversy and no one knows when the project will be finished. Two deadlines have already passed for the completion of the IT project. The project is way over budget and still there is no viable launch date in sight.
The bottom line is that when young professionals are being treated in such a harsh and non transparent manner the message is clear to them. If you are not related to this clique or you are not associated with the PPP, you have no future in Guyana.
Dr. Asquith Rose and Harish S. Singh.
