The proprietor of Satnam Variety Store was yesterday brought before the courts to answer to a human trafficking charge which was filed against him. At the hearing, Navin Kujreja, a Bel Air resident, was granted bail to the tune of $1M by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Reports indicate that the rescue of the young man was the result of a sting operation led by the Guyana Women Miners’ Organization (GWMO), the Human Services Ministry and the Guyana Police Force.
The Indian national was allegedly involved in an abusive labour situation at the store since his arrival in Guyana last December where he has been working with Satnam Variety Store as a sales clerk. The victim had reported that he received no salary, though he was promised US$300 monthly.
When an officer of the Ministry’s Trafficking in Person (TIP) Unit and a police rank walked into the store under the guise of shopping, the victim, who was assisting customers, secretly expressed fear and the need to be rescued.
Yesterday when the case was heard, the Chief Magistrate granted the accused bail and he is expected to make his next court appearance on January 7, 2014.
