Joslyan Congreaves and Dwayne Fraser who were last year apprehended for attempting to smuggle cocaine to Thailand, will now spend the next four years of their lives behind the prison bars.
Yesterday, the accused made their final appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where they were told that coupled with their sentence, they will also pay a fine of $30,000 after being found guilty of being in possession of 1.726 kilograms of cocaine.
The matter was first heard before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry and the men had pleaded not guilty. However, after engaging the attention of the court for some time, the Magistrate’s decision was handed down yesterday. The men were found guilty of possession of the illicit substance for the purpose of trafficking on July 3 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
According to previous reports, the cocaine was found concealed in a shipment of dry goods. Of the eight boxes, four had cocaine in their walls. It was reported that in a bid to conduct illegal business, a fake shipping company called D.A Imports and Exports was set up and was said to be located at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, but checks to that location had proven that the company did not exist.
The men reportedly tried to post the drug through Amerijet freight services at CJIA. The boxes due for shipping had contained various food items such as curry, masala and stashed in between the layers of the cardboard where the cocaine had been planted.
The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) had stated that the men, while their documents were being checked at the airport, sped off in a car. Quick action by CANU ranks in Georgetown saw the men being intercepted at Craig Old Road, East Bank Demerara where they were apprehended.
After the illegal substance was discovered, the boxes were then escorted to the CANU Headquarters where additional investigations were carried out.
