Hard work over the past fiscal year has netted several Lawn Tennis players remarkable successes and their efforts were noted and tangibly rewarded when the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) held their 2013 Awards ceremony in the dining room of the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, Georgetown, Monday evening last.
Senior players, Carol Humphrey and Anthony Downes copped the top female and male awards respectively, while administrators employed a point system to decide the on the junior awardees based on their tennis performance (40%), academic performance (20%), attendance at practice (20%) and discipline (20%).
The respective awardees in the Ladies Novice Singles were Kizzy Richmond with Tracy Shamshudeen as the runner up. Darren King copped the award for the Men’s Novice singles and the runner up was Jesus Lamazon.
The latter player then teamed up with Khawn Rodney to take the medley Novice Doubles. The girl’s U-18 champion is Afruica Gentle with Jaamali Holder occupying the runners up position. Nicola Ramdyhan and Gavin Lewis also received awards for their runners up positions in the mixed doubles while Leyland Leacock and Shelly Ramdyhan won that category.
Several other players were amply rewarded after finishing in top positions. They included Carlos Adams, Owen Lewis, Omar Persaud, Godfrey Lowden and Jason Andrews.
Meanwhile, President of the GTA, Ramesh Seebarran, delivered a comprehensive report of the activities of the players. He noted that the award ceremony was the first after a number of years even as he expressed optimism that it will once again be an annual feature.
He congratulated the recipients of awards and said that the idea behind the function was to inspire the players to aspire for higher accomplishments. The GTA President also noted that the development of the sport is severely hampered by the unavailability of courts that meet the basic requirements of the parent body, the International Tennis Federation.
He said that he was optimistic that this anomaly would soon be rectified as he had recently brought this to the attention of Minister of Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony, who has instructed that his executive submit the relevant quotations to enable his Ministry to attend to the issue.
Earlier, GOA President K.A.Juman Yassin had presented a cheque to the value of $200,000 to the GTA President to offset some of their expenses. Mr. Seebarran expressed deep gratitude saying that the gift will assist in some administrative work.
