Giftland OfficeMax yesterday announced the winner of its Hockey Sports Ambassador at its Mega Store on Water & Holmes Sts. South Cummingsburg. The third leg of ‘The Quest’ comprised of GCC player Aliyah Gordon and Hikers’ Janella Munroe.
Kwadjo Garnett from Buxton United Football Club had copped the second title of Giftland Sports Ambassador after GDF bodybuilder Devon Davis became the first ambassador in August when the
programme was launched.
Yesterday, Giftland announced the winner in Ms. Giftland “The Striker” 2013–2014, Aliyah Gordon.
Gordon, who attends, Queens College, will benefit from at least $300,000 in sports equipment and academic material and yesterday signed the one-year agreement in the presence of her Father, Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) Secretary, Tricia Fiedtkou and Janella Munroe of Hikers Hockey Club.
Gordon acquired 564 votes, which were conducted on facebook, BBM and in-store voting, while Munroe received 484 votes and was awarded $10,000.
Aliyah Gordon 2013 Achievements:
· October 2013 – Named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the GT&T National Indoor Championship
· September – Represented Guyana at the Pan American Hockey Federation Cup (PAHF) in Argentina
· Youngest Player on the team
· One of only two local players to score a goal in the tournament
· August, 2013 – Represented Guyana at the Canadian Senior National Hockey Championships
· Caribbean Kids Hockey Festival, voted Most Valuable Player, Girls under 16
Compton Babb, Giftland’s Public Relations Officer explained that his company supports Hockey and every other sport and promised Giftland’s continued support of the careers of talented young sportsmen. He said the company intends to assist them to develop academically.
“Everyone here is a champion. We at Giftland are happy and proud to be associated with and want to build a strong and long-lasting relationship with our young sporting Ambassadors,” Babb said.
According to Babb, Track and Field will be the next leg with the champion being chosen from the just-concluded 53rd National Schools Championship. He said all athletes chosen are entitled to a one year endorsement with Giftland OfficeMax.
