Santos FC defeated Young Achievers 2-1, while Rosignol United bullied Den Amstel FC in their own backyard and walked away with a victory by a similar margin when action in the GFF Premiere Super League continued at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground yesterday afternoon.
Keishawn Lovell (27th) and Odel Williams (31st) were on target for Santos FC while Daryl Gomes (15th) contributed for Young Achievers. Winston Benjamin opened Rosignol’s account in the 37th minute and he received support from Tyson Carmichael (80th). Travis Hilliman narrowed the margin of defeat for Den Amstel in the 85th minute.
The Santos FC/Young Achievers shindig was contested in muddy conditions due to overnight rains but the two teams shrugged aside the impediment and played at a fast rate. Gomes’ strike came after a brilliant exchange just in front of the opposition’s goal mouth that sent his teammates into wild ecstasy. It was not long before Michael Pedro attempted to equalize but though his strike had sufficient power it lacked direction and ended up over the upright. Williams also muffed a chance shortly afterwards when he darted to the Young Achiever’s berth but the custodian met him halfway and forced a lame kick that the latter individual scooped up.
Lovell’s chance came after he was fouled just outside the box and awarded a free kick which he duly curled around the improvised wall to send his team ahead shortly before the intermission. The second half started slowly as both teams seem to have been affected by the heated first half. Amidst it all, Marvin Josiah, Deion Terrence and Daryl Gomes turned in a wonderful display of skill for the Young Achievers as they dexterously passed the ball around but their efforts dwindled to naught as their opponents tightened their defense and averted any catastrophe. The game then developed into a ferocious encounter as Santos FC battled to retain its lead while their opponents hustled to equalize. The final whistle sent Santos into a celebratory mood.
Rosignol United started at a disadvantage with the crowd egging on the home team, Den Amstel. George Simmons slammed in a long shot from the right flank but the Den Amstel custodian was up to the task and punched the ball back into play. Winston Benjamin collected the rebound and made no mistake to send the Berbicians ahead.
Carmichael’s goal came after a clever bit of dribbling that culminated in a pin point strike that flew past the Den Amstel custodian. The home team them upped the ante and narrowed the lead after Hilliman’s strike but were denied the equalizer after their opponents defended stoutly up to the final whistle.
