The clean-up campaign which was expected to last for one week by the Ministry of Public Works has been extended. This is due to the fact that the works in the Charlestown and Albouystown areas in Georgetown have been more arduous for the contractors as opposed to any other area they have cleaned thus far.
Yesterday, several contractors, and engineers were seen at Sussex Street, overseeing the works being done on the drain.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, explained that the initiative at first included the cleaning of several outfalls such as the one at Ruimveldt, the trenches and drains.
He said, “What we are doing now is cleaning the trenches in Albouystown because these are more clogged than others. The work requires more work because of how clogged the drains are. We are removing the garbage and other debris which will be taken to the dump site.
“For drainage to be enhanced in these two areas, they will require more work than we bargained for. We brought in two excavators and both are being used to remove the garbage from the Sussex Street Canal.”
The Minister added that these activities do not fall under his Ministry. He said that it is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Council (MCC). He added that the work should be completed by the end of this new week.
When asked about the cost of the project, the Minister said, “I can’t tell you that right now. At the end of it we will know. It is being funded by the Ministry of Public Works and we will disclose this figure by next week.”
