Inclusion of parking facilities in new high rise structures that are being erected in and around Georgetown, is the practical solution to the growing traffic congestion plaguing commuters daily.
This notion was expressed by Traffic Chief, Hugh Denhart, during a recent interview.
According to Denhart, every year there is an additional 10,000 vehicles on the roadway. Purchasing vehicles has become easy since loans are readily accessed through commercial banks and auto dealers have very affordable arrangements. These are two main reasons for the increasing traffic, he added.
He stressed that even with increasing traffic, roadways and streets in and around Georgetown are not increasing. There are instances where converting streets into one-way and widening roadways could help but those are not the solution.
According to Denhart, alternative parking for vehicles would help to increase width of carriageways and provide a semblance of order. He said that high rise buildings should be built with facilities for customers and employees. This, he stressed would be a significant help to the current situation.
The idea of having buildings with parking facilities in Georgetown is not new. In fact, Professor Akbar Khan who had done a City development plan had recommended the inclusion of parking area for businesses.
According to Deputy Mayor, Patricia Green, this development plan was accepted by Cabinet but the recommendations are slow to be implemented. She said that the landscape of Regent Street and other business sections of Georgetown is changing with modern buildings but parking areas are not part of the super structure.
She noted that the plan took into consideration the narrowness of city streets and called for the relocation of the Georgetown’s Prison, situated on Camp Street. Green added that overhead walkways to help reduce human traffic on the roadway.
