In sweltering heat at the Everest ground four half-centuries led Berbice to first innings points against the President’s X1 on the second day of their four-day Hand-in-hand/GT&T inter-county cricket contest yesterday.
Berbice, on the back of an unbeaten half-century from Royston Crandon (79) and three more from Assad Fudadin (58), Sewnarine Chattergoon (55) reached 265-6 in reply to the 185 all out posted by the President’s X1 to handthe lads from Guyana’s second largest county a lead of 80 runs going into the final day today.
Berbice began their innings when play resumed yesterday and by Lunch had progressed to 98-1 after losing Anthony D’Anrade for duck by fast bowler Romario Shepard with just a single on the board.
At the Interval the second wicket stand between Chattergoon and Fudadin was worth 97 as Chattergoon in particular played an array of elegant drives and cuts on the heavy outfield a slow track.
When play resumed the 32-year-old Chattergoon with four Tests and 79 First-class games under his belt, seemed very unlucky to be given out LBW after hitting four fours to leave Berbice on 109-2 as the 108-run partnership was finally broken.
The 28-year-old Fudadin who played all of his three Tests year and now sporting a flowing beard, fell at 145-3 when he was trapped in front by national leg-spinner Steven Sankar after reaching the boundary four times and by Tea the team from the Ancient county were 166-3 from 63 overs.
The 30-year-old Crandon, who made five in his only ODI, batted confidently and picked the gaps well and along with 23-year-old Jonathon Foo shared in a 114-run stand to give Berbice first innings points in the final session.
Foo batted intelligently and was looking set for a big score when he pushed long forward to off-spinner Collis Butts and was adjudged LBW at 259-4.
Butts, the son of West Indies selector and former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts, struck twice in the space of four runs as Berbice slipped to 265-6 in fading light.
Rajiv Ivan (1) and Anthony Bramble (2) fell minutes before the 17:00hrs close leaving Crandon, who has one First-Class ton, unbeaten at the end of the day’s play with Berbice pressing for an outright win today to join defending champions Demerara on top of the points table after the opening round.
Butts has so far picked up 3-40 from 29 overs of controlled spin bowling.
