Half centuries for Barnwell, Patadin, Mohamed, Federicks
By Zaheer Mohamed
Off spinner Zaheer Mohamed grabbed 6 wickets for 11 runs off 11.4 overs as Demerara defeated Essequibo by an innings and 54 runs in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) organised Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T)\Hand-in-Hand Insurance senior inter-county 4-day tournament yesterday.
Needing to score 165 to make Demerara bat a second time, Essequibo were bowled out for 110 in 34.4 overs in the final session on the third day at Enmore Community Centre ground, East Coast Demerara.
In reply to Essequibo first innings score of 198, the home team resumed on their overnight first innings score of 172-4 with Christopher Barnwell on 48 and Chris Patadin yet to score. The pair carried the score to 229 before Barnwell was leg before to left arm spinner Anthony Adams for a well played 81. He slammed five fours and four sixes and faced 96 balls; his fifty came off 57 balls. Adams then trapped Joseph Perry leg before for 02 at 229-6 before Patadin and Mohamed put together 87 for the seventh wicket. Patadin who faced 148 balls and struck four fours was then leg before to Royan Federicks for 63 with the score on 316. Mohamed whose half century came off 135 balls then featured in an eight wicket stand of 46 with Paul Wintz who was dismissed for 16. Mohamed was unbeaten on 70 when Demerara declared on 362-8 off 104.1 overs just after lunch. His innings contained one six and four fours and came off 134 balls. Adams was the pick of the bowlers with 3-105 off 35 overs while Federicks claimed 2-38 off 8.1 overs.
Essequibo second innings got off to a solid start as openers Federicks and Kevon Boodie took the score to 51 off 10 overs at tea with the later on 37 and Boodie on 5. However Essequibo lost their first wicket just after the break when Boodie was leg before to Mohamed with out addition to the score. The consistent Mohamed then made further inroads into the visitors batting; he uprooted the stumps of Ricardo Peters (04) and Dillon Heyliger (00) and took a fine return catch to get rid of Kemo Paul (00) to leave the score at 65-4. Rovindra Parsram (01) was then caught behind as he attempted to cut a delivery too close to the off stump off Khan before Federicks who executed a number of lovely shots especially on the off side was well taken by Patadin on the long on boundary for a well played 51; his innings came off 70 balls and included four fours and two sixes.
The rest of the batting failed to show any resistance with only Parmesh Parsotam (12) and Rajiv Balgobin (16) reaching double figures. Mohamed ended with match figures of 10 for 57 while Khan who captured 3-48 off 14 overs finished the game with figures of 8- 112.
